Every drop (and letter) counts.

Btw, a few have commented on my FB fanpage about the confusion between donating blood and platelets etc.. I read up on some information from HSA Bloodbank Booklet and i will try and attempt to explain simply.

Basically, in our blood, there are different blood cells and these include red cells and platelets. They all have different functions. When we donate blood, each blood pack (of standard volume) will be processed into red blood cells, platelets and fresh frozen plasma.

Red blood cells are used to replace blood loss from accident or surgery etc; whereas platelets are essential for blood to clot and especially needed by cancer patients especially those with leukemia( which Boon Chong is suffering from) as they require frequent platelet transfusions to prevent life-threatening bleeding.

Healthy people have tremendous reserve of platelets and the apheresis procedure( where only platelets are removed from our blood and donated) can collect a larger number of platelets compared to whole blood donations.  The procedure will take 60-90mins and it is mentioned that for this procedure, one must be at least 50kg and 18 years old and above.

No mention about needing to be at least a 2nd time blood donor to do this but my suggestion would be if you are a first-time blood donor, go ahead and try donating blood if that is what you are comfortable with. (of course, if you need parental consent, get it!); don’t be deterred by all the extra information. However, if any one of you are interested in helping Boon Chong and other cancer patients even more directly and quickly, you can acquire more information online or ask the people in charge at Health Sciences Authority(HSA)  for more information on platelets donation.

Hope the above explanation helps! =)

I feel that as long as our bodies are healthy enough to undergo blood donation, being a regular blood-donor will definitely help a lot of patients who are in constant need of blood transfusions.

wah, a lovely subject heading :)

i think i see my letter in your pic!! i know you read it, but just wasn’t sure if you managed to receive it…either cos of wrong kind of stamp or what…and it’s probably my first posted letter since writing in to MediaCorp (to you, of course!).

but don’t quite get that last column (is that what you call it?) in your comic strip…what’s that thing (so big) you put in your mouth? i think we’re on different frequencies :P

i also think with you taking the lead to donate blood, it will encourage lots of people to do the same :)

Yes, if we are healthy ourselves we should really try to help others. Who knows whether we might need help ourselves some day too? Really wanted to go down to help your friend ytd but I couldnt): will do so in the coming week! And remember that we must be healthy before we can donate blood(free from flu or fever or cough) if not we might just spread our virus.
Wow what’s the thing you ate biting!! Looks like a mango heh:D
